The Blackstone River
runs wild through high
rocks at Blackstone
Gorge and may be the
most breathtaking
section of the
Blackstone River and its
last wild stretch. Here
you can stand on the
rocky cliffs and look
own into the river 80
feet below. Here the
Blackstone River
cascades over the
Rolling Dam and provides
a rare glimpse of the
heavily industrialized
river as it looked 200
years ago. When the
water levels are low,
stepping stones
allow the hiker to have
access in crossing the
river. The Rolling Dam
is straight ahead; the
gorge is through the
woods on the left. There
is parking and trails
are left of the Roaring
Dam.

Plein Air
Essentials.
En plein
air is a
French
expression
which means
“in the open
air”, and is
particularly
used to
describe the
act of
painting
outdoors.
Artists
have long
painted
outdoors,
but in the
mid-19th
century
working in
natural
light became
particularly
important to
the Barbizon
school and
Impressionism.
The
popularity
of painting
en plein air
increased in
the 1870s.
French
Impressionist
painters
such as
Claude
Monet,
Camille
Pissarro,
and Pierre-Auguste
Renoir
advocated en
plein air
painting,
and much of
their work
was done
outdoors, in
the diffuse
light
provided by
a large
white
umbrella.
American
Impressionists,
too, such as
those of the
Old Lyme
school, were
avid
painters en
plein air.
American
Impressionist
painters
noted for
this style
during this
era
included,
Guy Rose,
Robert
William
Wood, Mary
Denil
Morgan, John
Gamble, and
Arthur Hill
Gilbert.
The
Blackstone

Current Show: The
Art that Hitler Hated,
- but that title would
be a misnomer; a more
accurate title would add
that this is also the
art that the Kaiser
hated, that the
right-wingers who helped
to bring about the
downfall of the Weimar
Republic hated, and that
the militarists who
ultimately threw their
support to the Nazis
hated. Our new show

show - JAYME STONE AND
MANSA SISSOKO Africa to
Appalachia: The Routes
of the Banjo - Jayme
Stone may be unfamiliar
to many, but he has
spent considerable time
mastering the art of the
5-string banjo. A
student of many, Tony
Trischka and Bela Fleck
are but two who have
spent time guiding Jayme
in the ways of modern
banjo. Stone has
released two previous
albums that display his
propensity for complex
arrangements and jazzy
fare. In early 2008,
Stone was awarded a Juno
- the Canadian
equivalent of a Grammy
Award - for Instrumental
Album of the Year. The
Ontario native's third
CD is even more organic
in nature as it is
closely tied to the
history of the banjo and
the African instruments
from which it developed.
Stone spent time last
year in Mali exploring
the roots of the
5-string banjo. The
result of the
relationships forged
overseas is Africa to
Appalachia, a dynamic
new project that
successfully blends
traditional African
sounds - kora,
percussion, ngoni, and
vocals - with the
fiddles and banjos of
the Appalachian region
of the southern U.S.
While on his musical
mecca to Africa, Stone
rarely let locals know
of his accolades and
recording career in
North America as he went
to immerse himself in
the high-spirited
soundscapes, the daily
life and the lore of
Africa. On Africa to
Appalachia, his
collaborative project
with Mansa Sissoko, a
griot singer and master
player of the kora (a
21-string African harp),
Stone and Sissoko blur
the lines of time and
location. Africa and
America come closer
together with the banjo
being the bridge. Africa
to Appalachia serves as
a beautiful introduction
to world music while
providing those already
attracted to African
music a new twist, that
being the unobtrusive
and natural
incorporation of the
fiddle and banjo into
the blend. For those who
love the banjo, the
album provides an
insight to where the
banjo has been, and
where it might again go
within parameters that
have not frequently been
explored.

The Looff Carousel
was built in 1895 by
Charles I.D. Looff. This
is a stationary carousel
(the "jumping" mechanism
wasn't invented until
1888). What this
carousel lacks in
motion, it makes up for
in speed (considered the
fastest Looff made).
Originally at Lee
Funland in upstate NY,
it was moved here in
1910. The carousel
closed in 1967 and the
city put the carousel up
for sale in 1971.
Miraculously, it was
saved through community
efforts and fully
restored and reopened in
1979. It is listed on
the National Register of
Historic Places. This
carousel has three rows
with 42 horses, three
dogs, one camel, one
giraffe, one lion and
two chariots. The horses
have horsehair tails and
many have detailed
blanket rolls. It also
features a band organ
from 1910.
