Moonless nights on the sanctuary are hot,
humid, dark, and full of flying insects. Joe has been
inventorying moth diversity and abundance on the sanctuary for
many years. Over 300 species have been found, with the height of
diversity in July and August when 50 species can easily be seen.
After a short indoor introduction and a check of flowers at dusk
for hawk moths and other nectaring species, well walk the
trails to light sheets and sugary bait set up around the
sanctuary. Truly an adventure and a chance to participate in a
scientific inventory. Wear good shoes and bring water. For

deformed body to life as a sideshow freak until he is
befriended by a famous young surgeon. Under the care of Dr.
Frederick Treves, who educates Merrick and introduces him to
London society, the so-called "Elephant Man" changes from a
sensational object of pity to the urbane and clever darling
of the rich and famous. But can Merrick's dream to be
accepted as a man like any other come true? The Broadway
favorite of 1979, winning both Tony Award for best play and
the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, The Elephant Man is
a poignant and thoughtful journey to the core of human
dignity. With plainspoken yet masterful dialogue, Pomerance
creates "a moving drama" that "nests in the human heart."

Program Description: Although much is
being done by a number of conservation organizations to
forestall the losses in migratory bird populations, too
often the core issue either isn't clearly understood or it
isn't explained to the public in a compelling manner. The
most important point is that birds depend heavily on those
insects that are primarily supported by native plants. This
engaging program addresses the challenges these feathered
jewels face. It will demonstrate why native plants are
crucial to these creatures and show how every one of us can
make a positive difference for them in our own backyards,
regardless of the location or the size of the property. This
is a free program. For adults. Sponsored by Broad Meadow
Brook. For more information and to register, call

Great Road Historic District (Rt. 123), Lincoln,

Kathy Hartley, President

An ideal way to herald in the Fall season and
spend an afternoon with the family to learn what
life was like centuries ago. A trip to the Great
Road Historic District is like traveling through
300 years of history. Several historic sites
will be open for touring and demonstrations of
heritage crafts. At the majestic stone
Hearthside mansion, the craft of silhouettes, or
paper portraits, is one of the heritage crafts
being featured. Other crafts include spinning,
hand weaving, quill writing, soap making,
traditional chair making, quilting. Traditional
dulcimer music provided by members of the Little
Rhode Dulcimer Players. Hot apple crisp, apple
pies and cider available as well as Gift Shop.
Hand forging demonstrations take place next door
at the Hannaway Blacksmith Shop. At the 1693
Eleazer Arnold House, the grand stone ender that
is the oldest home in town, skilled artisans
demonstrating 17th century crafts will be
featured. Among them are a candlemaker, cooper,
horn maker, an Armorer, tinsmith and furniture
maker. Kids activities include wool carding and
drop spinning. Saylesville Friends Meetinghouse,
just around the corner, has been in continuous
use as a place of worship for over 300 years,
and the building is virtually unchanged. The
burial ground behind the meetinghouse has
tombstones dating back to the mid-1700s and
contain many of the Arnold family and Stephen
Hopkins Smith, the builder of Hearthside. Also
