3rd Annual "Footsteps In History" Program Extends Cultural Celebration
by Half a Year
New Program Features 24 Events over 24 Weekends in the 24 Communities of the Blackstone River Valley

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (May 30, 2007) – The 3rd Annual "Footsteps In History" program, the year’s largest showcase of the Blackstone River Valley’s cultural and historical attractions, announced today a new schedule extending its celebration over 24 weekends.

The new companion program called “24 * 24 * 24,” features 24 planned events taking place over 24 weekends in the 24 communities of the Blackstone River Valley, and will be held in addition to the regularly scheduled Columbus Day weekend attractions.

The program’s kickoff event is the Colonial Trades Fair at the Willard House & Clock Museum in Grafton, Mass., taking place on Sunday, June 3 from 12:00 to 4:00 pm. The fair will feature activities for the whole family including costumed interpreters, homemade delicacies and a silent auction. Further event details may be found at www.willardhouse.org.

“Based on our overwhelming success from last year and visitor feedback, we have decided to grow the program. We will now showcase one cultural or historical event or site during each weekend from June through November,” said Lorraine Provencher, Footsteps in History Coordinator.

“Visitors can explore a new Blackstone Valley treasure each weekend for the next 24 weeks, including concerts, tours, open houses, craft fairs, festivals, competitions, hay rides, auctions and more.”

The "Footsteps In History" program, now in its third year, drew about 15,000 attendees in 2006, up 11,000 from its inaugural year.

Here is a sample of the other events visitors may enjoy during 24 * 24 * 24:

  • Saturday, June 23, Glocester, R.I. – 165th Commemoration Dorr March in Chepachet

  • Saturday, July 7, Blackstone, Mass. – Independence Concert at Daniels Farmstead

  • Saturday, July 21, Cumberland, R.I. – Celtic Festival at Blackstone River Theater.

  • Sunday, August 11, Sutton, Mass. – 250th Celebration & Fiddle Concert at Waters Farm

On Columbus Day Weekend, October 6-8, the 24 communities of the Blackstone River Valley will open their doors to their best cultural and historical attractions. Many of the 100 sites featured during the Footsteps in History program are not open to the public on a regular basis. Some locations will be offering free admission.

The 46-mile river valley between Worcester, Massachusetts and Providence supports a treasure trove of rare and unique homes, early industrial manufacturing operations, places of worship, timeless farms, a carousel, candy shop and Celtic folk theater.
